Both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung are famous psychoanalysis's with unique approaches to personality. At one point they shared many of the same theories and had a deep friendship. In fact, Jung was to be heir to Freud's position as president of the International Psychoanalytic Association. However, Jung developed several new theories and disagreements with Freud. After years of friendship the pair parted in 1913. There were three main areas of personality which Jung disagreed with Freud on--the role of sexuality, temporal forces that influence personality, and the unconscious. In the study of personality, Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud had similar opinions and findings on what caused a person to behave in a certain way. There were two major similarities in these two infamous theories. First off, they both believed that a person’s psyche was composed of the conscious and unconscious mind. In the conscious mind, they believed that thoughts, desires and memories, which the person was aware of, were housed in this section of the mind. Conversely, painful and repressed memories were held in the unconscious mind where a virtual boundary between these two sections prevented such memories from slipping into the conscious mind. Secondly, both theories agreed on the fact that dreams reached out to the unconscious mind where repressed memories and deepest desires manifested themselves which could be shared for the treatment of psychopathological illnesses such as hysteria and psychosis.
